A root canal is a procedure that is needed when the soft tissue (that contains the nerves and blood vessels) of the tooth is infected or inflamed. This infection and inflammation often cause severe tooth pain, which is corrected with a root canal.

In order for this procedure to be long-lasting, it is often restored with a crown or filling to protect it.
