What are fillings?

Fillings are used to fill voids that remain after the treatment of cavities. There are two types of fillings that are very similar but differ in how they are applied and the actual material used. Amalgam fillings are a combination of metals such as silvery, mercury and copper. Composite fillings are a tooth-colored resin and glass mixture filling. Composite fillings are most often the recommended type of filling due to esthetics. Nathen Ellis and Gary Hubbard of Denver Dental Arts in Denver, NC, encourage patients to understand their choices.

Benefits of fillings:

  • Fillings are completed in one visit.
  • Most fillings require minimal preparation of the natural tooth structure.
  • Fillings require normal dental hygiene.
  • Composite fillings are aesthetically pleasing and often undetectable.
  • Filling size can be adjusted to fit any size void.

What is the procedure of fillings?

Fillings are needed when a cavity develops. These two filling types are very similar in their application in that the decayed portion of the tooth is removed and filled with the selected type of filling. Composite fillings will then require a special adhesive or bonding agent and a special light to speed the curing of the filling. The bonding process and light curing steps do not apply to amalgam fillings. Both options are quickly performed and will remain functional for many years.

Drs. Nathen Ellis and Gary Hubbard restore cavities with composite resin that will blend in beautifully with your natural tooth color. Composite resins are strong and durable, contains no mercury or metal, is free of BPAs.
